Best One-Handed EDC Knives Under $150: Flippers, SpeedSafe & Thumb Holes

Practical deployment when your other hand is occupied — indexed and ranked.
By CarryIndex · May 2026 · Database filtered for deployment mechanism

One-handed opening is a frequently marketed feature and an occasionally necessary one. If you carry a bag, have a dog on a leash, are frequently gloved, or work in environments where both hands are rarely free simultaneously, deployment mechanism is a real differentiator — not a fidget-toy spec.

We filtered the CarryIndex database for every folder under $150 with a confirmed one-hand deployment mechanism: flipper tabs, SpeedSafe assisted opening, Spyderco thumb holes, thumb studs with wave features, and OTF automatics where legal. Then we ranked by price, because under $150 the value distribution is wide enough to matter.

Legal note: Assisted opening knives (SpeedSafe) are legal in most US jurisdictions but check your local laws. OTF automatics have more restrictions. Thumb holes and flipper tabs are legal virtually everywhere.

The Rankings — Best Value First
#1 Penguin
PenguinBest Budget Flipper
QSP
Thumb Hole90g$30D2
Flipper-deployed with a liner lock and D2 steel for $30. The Penguin isn't subtle but it's a competent flip for the money. D2 needs more care than stainless but holds an edge well.
#2 Cryo

Flipper113g$358Cr13MoV
Flipper deployment in a Kershaw chassis. Reliable one-hand carry.
#3 Pilar
PilarMost Compact Flipper
CRKT
Thumb Hole90g$508Cr13MoV / D2
Frame lock with flipper, compact and heavy for its size. The Pilar's form factor divides people — you either love the stubby proportions or don't understand them.
#4 Leek
LeekBest Assisted Under $60
Kershaw
SpeedSafe65g$55Sandvik 14C28N
SpeedSafe assisted opening gives the Leek sub-second deployment for one legal dollar. Slim, corrosion-resistant 14C28N, and $55 makes this the default recommendation for assisted carry.
#5 Elementum
ElementumBest European Flipper
Civivi
Flipper104g$55D2
D2 flipper at $55. The Elementum is the European-designed folder that punches above its price through sheer refinement. Flipper action is among the smoothest at this price.
#6 Pilar III
Pilar IIIBest Upgraded Pilar
CRKT
Flipper113g$55D2
Pilar III runs the same frame-lock flipper formula as the Pilar but with a longer blade. D2 steel, G10 + stainless handle, more usable blade length at virtually the same price.
#7 Praxis
PraxisBest Working Flipper
Civivi
Flipper92g$65D2
D2 flipper in a larger format — 3.75 inch blade, G10 scales, liner lock. The Praxis gives you working blade length without crossing into dedicated tool territory.
#8 Iridium
Iridium

#9 Blur S30V
Blur S30VBest Assisted Premium Steel
Kershaw
SpeedSafe116g$90CPM-S30V
CPM-S30V with SpeedSafe in a Kershaw aluminum chassis. The Blur is the knife that converts people to assisted opening — deployment is both legal and fast. S30V is a legitimate steel at this price.
#10 Feist
FeistBest Ultralight Flipper
Kizer
Flipper42g$95154CM
Front flipper at 42g. The Feist is Kizer's entry into the ultralight flipper market and it succeeds: 154CM steel, liner lock, and a deployment that requires the lightest finger pressure.
